How local governments' obsession with parking increases the costs of everything, especially housing.
Mandatory parking minimums are typical in most North American cities’ Zoning By-laws. They establish a minimum number of required parking stalls on a given property, depending on its use. The City of Toronto recently removed mandatory parking minimums for some residential uses in its Zoning By-law. However, the fight against compulsory parking minimums is far from over, as the City of Toronto Zoning By-law still requires a minimum number of parking stalls, mainly where primarily commercial or mixed-use (commercial/residential in the same building) zoning is concerned.
