The Hidden Costs of Mandatory Parking Minimums.

How local governments' obsession with parking increases the costs of everything, especially housing.

Mandatory parking minimums are typical in most North American cities’ Zoning By-laws. They establish a minimum number of required parking stalls on a given property, depending on its use. The City of Toronto recently removed mandatory parking minimums for some residential uses in its Zoning By-law. However, the fight against compulsory parking minimums is far from over, as the City of Toronto Zoning By-law still requires a minimum number of parking stalls, mainly where primarily commercial or mixed-use (commercial/residential in the same building) zoning is concerned.
